Abstract EN

The current research aimed at developing a mobile learning application based on social media networks (Facebook and WhatsApp).

Besides, it aimed at measuring the effectiveness of this application in developing knowledge-building processes and the attitudes toward mobile learning among postgraduate students at the Faculty of Education, Damanhur University.

A set of the main standards associated with designing the mobile learning environment which was based on social media networks were devised.

The research sample consisted of (294) male and female postgraduate students who were equally assigned into three groups: two experimental groups and a one control group.

A scale was designed to monitor knowledge-building processes, and another one was used to measure students' attitudes toward mobile learning.

Results were analyzed using inferential statistics (one-way analysis of variance: ANOVA).

Results of the data statistical analysis indicated the effectiveness of the mobile learning environment which was based on social networks (Facebook & WhatsApp) in developing knowledge-building processes compared to the control group.

The results also indicated the effectiveness of the mobile learning environment based on social networks in developing students' positive attitudes toward mobile learning.

Besides, the results revealed that the WhatsApp-based mobile learning environment was more effective in developing students' knowledge-building processes compared to the Facebook-based mobile learning environment.

Students' attitudes were more positive regarding using Facebook as a social media network compared to using WhatsApp.

This research recommended integrating different social media networks in the mobile learning environment in order to develop students' knowledge-building processes and positive attitudes towards mobile learning.
