Abstract EN

The present paper is simply based on the semantic employment of plant vocabulary in colloquial proverbs.

This has been achieved by examining the central semantic features that are unique to these terms.

The research chooses The Dictionary of Colloquial Proverbs by Ahmed Taymour Pasha as an application of the idea.

The research is divided into: (1) an introduction that tackles Ahmed Taymour Pasha and his aforementioned dictionary, (2) along with two studies, the first of which deals with plant terms in proverbs and lexical classification, and the second a dictionary of plant terms in colloquial proverbs.

The paper ends in a conclusion that summarizes the most important findings, a list of the studied terms and a Works Cited page.

Among the most important findings of the research are: the diversity of plant vocabulary and the multiplicity of their semantic features, and its subordination to some phenomena such as synonyms and antonyms.

Likewise, the paper shows the convergence between colloquial and generated proverbs, the ability of colloquial proverbs to derive and generate from plant terms, and the predominance of the collective gender name over these terms.

Colloquial proverbs also used some of the plant expressions in the form of the additional compounds with new linguistic connotations that were unique to the colloquial proverbs.

Some plant expressions in such colloquial proverbs are linguistically correct, albeit uncommon.

The study reveals that the vernacular has reserved for itself the neglected aspect of linguistic use, and that the links between the colloquial and the literary are not ent.
