Al-Anababi and the Tools of Textual Cohesion in Al-Basmallah: An Applied Critical Study The field of critical studies have witnessed the emergence of a miscellany of new concepts that occupied the interest of researchers and scholars.

'Textual Cohesion' is the most prominent of these concepts.

Researchers have expanded the theoretical and applied scope of this term since its first use by Western researchers and its introduction to the Arab world what resulted into the multiplicity of specialized critical studies in this field.

This study sheds light on the efforts of our scholars in this field ahead of them the renowned Arab grammarian Alanbabi who conducted his study on textual cohesion in Al-Basmalah and which was done long before its counterparts in the western world.

The title of this paper is " Al- Anababi and the tools of textual cohesion in Al-basmallah: An Applied Critical Study".

This paper begins with a study of the problematic concept of 'textual cohesion', its mechanisms and its repercussions on the academic studies of scholars like Al- Anababi.

It attempts to answer some of the questions related to this field of study.

This paper is divided into an introduction, two chapters and a conclusion: Chapter one: Between textual cohesion and meaning.

It branches into five subsections: 1- Definition of textual cohesion and its tools.

2- Textual cohesion in Arabic heritage.

3- Semantics and its impact on textual cohesion.

4- The role of Arabic Grammar in textual cohesion.

Chapter two: Mechanisms of textual cohesion in Al-basmallah according to Al-Anbabi.

It consists of the following subsections: 1- Referral.

2- Definiteness and indefiniteness.

3- Ellipsis.

The Conclusion sums up the most important findings of the study.

It shows that that textual cohesion has its own tools which play a key role in maintaining the semantic coherence of text.

It also shows that Arab scholars have preceded the west in the foundation of this linguistic technique and have had their own terms and concepts.

It is worth mentioning that grammar plays a primary role in textual cohesion through the use of pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, and relative pronouns.

The role of the Ellipsis cannot be overlooked in the context textual coherence as well.

Likewise, the tools of linguistic textual coherence such as attribution and agreement between the adjective and noun must be elicited in grammar.

Distinguished Arab scholars were alerted to the signified-signifier relationship and the importance of the context long before the emergence of the western theories of cohesion and coherence i.

e Arabic pragmatics preceded Western pragmatics.

Al-Anababi revealed the role of referral as a tool of textual cohesion that links linguistic structures to each other and creates a cohesive feature in Al-basmallah.

He also pointed out that Ellipsis plays a key role in building the coherent feature of the text in Al-basmallah.

He states that the recipient tries to elicit the omitted parts and hence to understand the intended meaning.

Al-Anbabi further explained the effect of definite and indefinite articles in creating coherent texts in terms of smooth correlations and consistent relationships.
