The period following the death of Alexander the Great (356 BC-323 BC), historically known as the Wars of the Diadochi, witnessed a great conflict between Alexander the Great's successors from leaders for the rule of his vast empire.

The Wars of the Diadochi extended from 322 until the end of 281 BC, and despite the end of the Wars of the Diadochi at the end of the year 281 BC, the following year, of 280 BC, witnessed a new trouble represented by the attack of the Celtic tribes (Gaul) on Macedonia.
