Abstract EN

The study aims to explore the role of the acceptable use policy (AUP) of technology in the Saudi governmental universities in fostering digital citizenship for their students.

It sought to study the current situation of AUP in terms of availability, the nomenclature and their content in Saudi universities.

Content analysis of the AUPs of the Saudi universities with respect to digital citizenship elements was utilized to collect data.

The results showed that the use of AUP in Saudi universities is still primitive.

The results also showed that the current policies of universities contribute to inculcating the values and behavior of digital citizenship if activated as needed such as developing a process that required students to read and obey AUP.

AUP focused on addressing the issues related to the use of technology in universities through emphasis five elements of digital citizenship : digital law, digital communication, digital behavior, rights and responsibilities, and digital security.

A number of recommendations to activate the role of the AUP in promoting responsible behaviors of digital citizenship were included as well.
