The rules of international humanitarian law devoted special protection for civilians from all forms of violence in armed conflicts, however, this didn’t prevent the parties to the armed conflict from resorting to methods of combat are is a serious violation of these rules, especially when civilians are used as human shields to protect military installations, or to help flee the armed attack.

This raises the problem of how to bind the parties to an armed conflict to the duty of protection established under these rules.

Therefore, the importance of this study emerges in identifying the most important international texts that guarantee protection for civilians from their use as human shields, according to a critical approach to what is stated in these texts and an inductive approach to international practices, which emphasizes the will of the international community to prevent and suppress these practices and consider them a war crime.
