The green areas are among the most important requirements of modern cities as the city's lungs.

Therefore, the study was selected (spatial analysis of green areas within the basic design of the city of Samarra using geographic information systems).

The problem was formulated as follows: The size of the population in the neighborhoods of the city? Is the distribution of these areas have been scientifically studied? What are the possibilities of GIS in the interpretation and analysis of the direction of these areas within the basic design? ) the study sought to formulate in the light of the problem, which are preliminary solutions, including that the area of green areas does not fit the size of the population in the neighborhoods of the city, and that the excesses have a significant impact on the areas allocated to green areas in the study area.

The most important programs used are the Arc Gis9.3 program for producing maps, which requires skill and accuracy in work.

The research followed the descriptive approach in the spatial analysis of the data on the green areas.

The conclusions of the study are the contribution of the master plans for the city of Samarra in the distribution of green areas within Urban space According to planning standards, Through the standard distance and the size of the large circle, which shows that the green areas are in a state of dispersion and far from concentration, and the contribution of planning decisions and weak administrative and municipal performance to increase the volume of functional change of green areas, which reflected the urban environment.
