Abstract EN

The present article addresses the issue of religious violence through the lenses of the anthropological triangle proposed by Mohammed Arkoun.

It considers the relationship between religious violence and the experience of the sacred and the truth inherent to monotheistic religions to show that violence is not consubstantial to the latters, even less to Islam, but that it is a feature of human nature in general.

The article also attempts to suggest a number of lines of thought and theoretical orientations that are likely to help both believers and non-believers to not only better understand themselves, but also to better apprehend the others in their differences.

The results of the approach show that the roots of evil are to be sought in a deeper anthropology which complements a historical, a sociological, and a psychological study, in order to explain the causes of religious violence, like ethnocentrism and “mutual exclusion of peoples.
