This Study aimed at investigating the role of cooperative learning and problem - solving in teaching the course of statistics for 3rd year students arts section in comparison with the traditional method so as to enhance students' academic achievement.The empirical method was adopted, the research comprising of (150) students was divided into three groups: the controlled group (B) was taught using the traditional method, and the experimental group (A) that was taught by the cooperative learning, and the controlled group (B) was taught by using problem - solving method, the researcher adopted the achievement test for research purpose after verifying the validity and reliability.
The results of the three groups were analyzed by using mean, standard diversion and T-test for statistical significant.The study arrived at the following results: the experimental group (A) that was taught using the cooperative method scored better scores than the controlled group that was taught by using the traditional method.
This indicated the effectiveness of the cooperative method.The controlled group (B) that was taught by using the problem - solving method performed better than the controlled group that was taught by using the traditional method as far as the achievement results are concerned.
This indicated the effectiveness of the problem - solving method and it in turn confirmed the effectiveness of problem - solving method.The controlled group (B)that was taught by the cooperative method performed better than the experimental group (B) that was taught by the problem - solving method, this in turns confirmed the effectiveness the cooperative method.Based on these results, the researcher recommended the following:There is a need to adopt a variety of teaching methods,attention should be paid to the cooperative and problem - solving methods.The researcher also recommended using the cooperative and problem - solving method because of their effectiveness in teaching statistics course for secondary school, training course should be organized to train inspectors and teachers on how to use the cooperative and problem - solving methods.
