Abstract EN

The Umayyads in Al-Andalus relied heavily on their mawālī to manage the political and administrative affairs of the state.

They entrusted government and administrative positions to specific families of mawālī whose client-relationship with the Umayyads had begun in the Mashriq when the caliphate was still based in Damascus.

Among the most important of these families were the Banū Mughīth, Banū Shahīd, Banū Abī ʿAbduh, and the Banū Ḥadīr, whose members occupied the posts of wazīr, ḥājib, ṣāḥib al-sūq, ṣāḥib al-khayl, and khazzān.
