Abstract EN

This paper addresses some of the key reasons behind the disinclination of the West-for all intense and purposes, superior in terms of the use of mechanisms of literary creativity- to translate the literary heritage of the Arab world -both poetry and prose- notwithstanding a limited number of literary works.

This limited selection of literary texts was translated into other languages thanks to some Orientalists, and thus became widely known.

The translation of the masterpieces of world literature into Arabic has led to the emergence of other literary disciplines that contributed to the diversification of the Arab literary scene, as well as put an end to a long period of poetry domination on both the artistic and creative levels.

Furthermore, this paper attempts to elucidate the issue of the translatability of poetry by reviewing the work of a number of researchers from both camps, those who believe it is possible to translate poetry and those who do not.
