Abstract EN

Open data have witnessed a large-scale momentum in the Western and Arab world throughout the recent past years.

The international and national institutions ‘data, be they of public or private sectors, has become openly available in all types for potential users.

The study is aimed at exploring Saudi universities current practices in managing the open data from perspectives of preferred locations, the body in charge of providing such availability, disclosure of relevant policies and licenses, open data types, and available file formats.

The study concluded that Saudi universities were interested in providing just administrative data, and this was not provided through university repositories or data services.

Rather, it came in static web pages without any search facilities, services related to research data, or specific data management plans.

We have also found that this trend is prevalent in the Kingdom at the national level in general, and in particular the Saudi Government Open Data portal and the Open Data page on the Ministry of Education website.

Based upon the evolutionary concept analysis, the study is aimed at drafting a conceptual perspective to establish a research data service and to provide relevant services to the Saudi universities.
