F29; E14; Q43; Q41; This study aims to shed light on the status of the Algerian trade balance during the period 2000-2019, also it addresses the determining factors of its balance and to analyze the commodity composition of both exports and imports.

We concluded that the Algerian trade balance achieved a positive surplus during the period 2000-2014, ranging between high and low, while the period 2015-2019 recorded a deficit in the trade balance with the hydrocarbon sector dominating exports despite the efforts made to boost exports apart from the hydrocarbons and to liberalize the foreign trade sector, and the main determinant of this status (surplus and deficit) are fluctuations in oil prices that are determined by external factors.
