Abstract EN

Our study aims to depict the extent of the commitment of journalists in the West of Algeria to the ethics of their profession.

We attempted to tacklethe problem through our field study that included 26 written newspapers, using the comprehensive survey methodology due to the ease of access to all the study population, numbering 131 individuals.

This study came in a circumstance not far from the issuance of the first organic law on the media in Algeria in 2012.

The latter included many articles and paragraphs concerned with the control of journalistic practice in its ethical aspect, defining the rights and duties of journalists without reducing or diminishing the margin of freedom of expression and opinion and the right of the citizen to an honest, impartial, transparent and objective media that respects its practitioners.

It also comprises all the charters and constitutions that regulate the profession of written journalism.

The study revealed that (50.

4%) of the respondents assert that they always adhere to the code of ethics of their profession out of respect for the reader who wants newspapers to provide an honest public service.

However, (87.

8%) of the respondents believe that the media scoop does not allow a journalist to go beyond the ethics of his profession.

Other results of the study showed that (39.

7%) of the respondents assert that there is a code of ethics for journalistic work within the institutions in which they work.
