Abstract EN
This research presents and discusses an important aspect of individual differences, related to memory, and the ability to receive and understand new auditory inputs.
The efficiency of phonological memory is one of the most important factors that affect an individual’s ability to acquire second language (L2) sounds, which its function is to receive, process, encode, and classify phonemic representations, and to transfer them to the long-term memory.
Studies have shown that the efficiency of phonological memory affects first language (L1) acquisition and L2 learning; by allowing the auditory inputs to be retained temporarily in the memory until they stabilize through repetition and phonetic training.
Since sounds are an essential element in a language all from which other linguistic elements are composed, this research reviews how to receive, process, classify and then apply them within the phonological space in memory, and it reveals the content of phonological memory, and its unlimited capacity to receive sound representations of the L1 and L2.
The research also provides three models for acquiring sounds, whichsought to explain how to receive and process new auditory inputs, and it aims to link the perception and production models proposed by phonologists with the Arabic sounds, and explain how they are perceived and produced according to these models.
It also provides details about the patterns of sounds’ perception expected by Arabic L2 learners.
Given the importance of engaging in aspects related to difficulties in L2 acquisition, and finding ways to overcome these difficulties, this research also focuses on the need to stimulate phonological memory; By increasing phonological awareness, adopting an explicit teaching approach, and focusing on the sound features, while using appropriate inputs to obtain better acquisition of L2 sounds.
