This article tackles the difficulties of applying the competency based approach.

The researcher in this field and the observer of teaching practices in our schools conclude that we still apply traditional methods of teaching that make the teacher the main focus in the educational process, in addition to the scarcity and sometimes lack of educational means, overcrowding of classes compared to the narrow classrooms, also the lack of appropriate duration for the teaching sessionto each subject.

Taken together, these factors prevent the application of a competency approach that encourages the learner to control the process of learning and to ensure the validity of what he has learned through application and experimentation.It is not enough to talk about the competency based approach and adopt it in the educational process if the learner does not achieve himself through it and works according to his own abilities and mental processes.

The first given that we should focus on and care about is: what has the learner acquirand why did he acquire it? How will he use what he has acquired and learned in other different or similar situations?If we answer these questions and put them at the heart of the educational situations that we propose to the learner, we will have succeeded in choosing the appropriate teaching methods to approach competencies, the success of the latter and overcoming the difficulties of applying them.Therefore, the actual application depends on conducting changes in all dimensions of the educational system rather than changing official courses and texts.
