Literal translation is among the most old procedures used since the beginning of translation exercising, and translators have long depend on this method as the most safe way to transfer textual contents between different languages, however point of views varied in deciding about its legitimacy in making the transfer because it lets the text loose beauty and deprives it from its soul especially when speaking about literature.

This is why, our study tries to observe the different judgments made about this procedure since ancient times, focusing on Peter NEWMARK point of view in this regard as one of the most strong supporters of literal translation principle, in order to prove at the end the legitimacy of literality and set the limits of its use.
