Abstract EN

The study included the effect of passive smoking exposure for different periods on some hematological and biochemical parameters in the blood of male rabbits, thirty adult male rabbit were used.

All animals were randomly divided into three groups depending on exposure time to cigarettes smoke, the first group was exposed for two hours daily for 14 days, the second group was exposed for four hours daily for 14 days, while the third group was considered as control group.

Results showed a significant decrease (p<0.05) in the body weight after exposure to cigarette smoking, while it showed increase (p<0.05) in each of the total number red and white blood cells (RBC & WBC), hemoglobin concentration (Hb) and total number of platelet (PLT) in groups exposed to cigarettes smoking as compared with control group.

The results also revealed that there is a significant increase in the activity of the enzymes: alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST), while a significant decreased (p<0.05) was observed in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in groups that exposed for two and four hours daily for 14 days respectively.

The highest enzymatical activity occurred when increasing the exposure time to four hours for 14 days.

Results showed also a significant (p<0.05) increase in urea and creatinine concentrations in the groups which was treated for two and four hours daily for 14 days as compared with the control group.

To conclude, passive Smoking exerts positive influence on liver functions test, and further study on the mechanism of the effects is warranted
