Abstract EN

The terminological definition received as much as a multitude of a scientific attention in 4th century AH, Ibn Osfour, in “Al-Muqarrab” book, devoted an effort in the process of making the definition in varying techniques.

The importance of this study deals with Ibn Osfour's effort made by in the process of terminology through extrapolating his book.

The main objective of this study is to define Ibn Osfour's methodology in the process of introducing terminologies, and to follow the techniques used in the process of explaining the concepts.

The study followed the descriptive method based on reading and analyzing the definitions, then classifying them by extracting the techniques.

The results of this research are: Emphasizing the importance of the definitions and the awareness of Arab scholars of this importance.

Ibn Osfour represented the logical stage in syntactical definitions.

The multiplicity of the techniques used, and using more than one technique in a single definition, according to the need to clarify the perception of the addressee.

The prevalence of the function identification technique of Ibn Osfour, emphasizes his awareness of syntax being linked to linguistic function.
