This paper studies methods of tahammul (taking knowledge from one's predecessors) and ada' (transmitting knowledge to students) in teaching grammar and morphology through following instances of their occurrence and the terminology involved in their usage in the works of Abu Ali al-Farisi (d.

AH 377) that have come down to us.

This is then compared with what scholars have accepted in an effort to establish grammarians' sources and the way in which they benefitted from other scholars.

Abu Ali al-Farisi's methodology in this regard is discussed as is his influence on his students.

The paper concludes that Abu Ali al-Farisi relied on direct transmission from his teachers both orally and through written texts more than through any other mode of transmission.

For the most part, he adhered to the meanings of the terminology of those methods.

His methodology influenced his students who followed in his footsteps in their own books.
