Abstract EN

The purpose of this research is to highlight the role of lexical meaning in revealing functional meaning in the writings of Ibn Hisham in his book Mughni Al-Labib An Kutub Al-a’arib.

In fact, the use of lexical meaning in Ibn Hisham’s writings plays a clear role in determining the functional meaning of the word, Moreover, his use of lexical meaning is considered one of the linguistic controls that determine favoring/weakening the decision of choosing one syntactic aspect over another which indicates Ibn Hisham's keen interest in interpreting forms and vocabular.

In addition, we find the role of the lexical meaning manifested in the permissibility of the use of almufaraq al-istethnaa in affirmative statements through the lexical interpretation of the verb as negative .

The role of lexical meaning, moreover, appears in justifying the state of mismatch in the Arabic sentence, and thus the sentence is considered grammatically correct based on the lexical meaning, which is the onlyjustification for breaking this grammar rule, otherwise it is considered a defect.

And let’s not forget the role of lexical meaning in the phenomenon of inclusion (Tathmeen) when the meaning of one word contains the semantic and functional features constituting the meaning of the second word.

That being said, Ibn Hisham resort to lexical meaning when the grammar rules are immutable, and the functional meaning is not useful for him.
