This study deals with the meaning of peacebuilding in post-conflict countries from an international perspective, with analysis and criticism.

The persistence of vulnerability and the proliferation of uncertainty often accompany the development of peace processes, where humanitarian crises and ongoing violations of human rights may continue even after the official cessation of hostilities.

Peacebuilding from an international perspective includes a wide range of measures aimed at reducing the risk of falling into or relapse into conflict by strengthening national capacities at all levels in order to manage relations between parties emerging from conflict and lay the foundations for sustainable peace and development.

Peacebuilding strategies must be coherent and conform to the needs of the country concerned, and should include a set of specific priority and sequential activities.

To what extent have the United Nations, its affiliated structures and the international community succeeded in achieving these goals in countries emerging from conflict?
