This study aimes to highlight the role and the importance of the balanced scorecard in evaluating the performance of the Algerian higher education institutions, particularly the research performance of these institutions.

The researcher suggest a model for the University of Farhat Abbess Setif1.

The study confirmed the validity and suitability of using balanced scorecard in order to evaluate the research performance of the university through formulating a model that corresponds its strategic orientations within the variables of internal and external environment.
