This study links knowledge collaboration with innovation, and ways of obtaining the necessary knowledge that affect the innovation.

Considering the process innovation as the result of R&D, we aim to highlight the determinants of knowledge structures that affect innovative and cognitive capabilities.

The evolution of cooperative activities shows the desired goal and the capabilities that can be result from this cooperation, especially the result of interaction of the internal and external firms' knowledge.

This result may be embodied through research efforts to innovations and patents that represents an aspect of institutional protection.

The development of innovative is mainly based on the ability of firms to value its knowledge capabilities linked with the development of the innovative capabilities.
