Abstract EN

Women’s place and role in medicine have varied over time and culture.

However, we can say that women’s position in medicine started to be recognised from the end of the 19th century.

Towards the end of the 19th century, women from different parts of the Arab-Islamic world defied social and cultural norms, and started to study medicine-either in their own country, or more commonly in universities in the West.

Attitudes towards women in medical history represent the general view of Arab-Muslim society on woman.

Women have been present throughout the history of medicine in Arab-Muslim states.

However, in terms of professional, state-accredited medicine, the second half of the 19th century was a key period for women’s education.

Many contributed to this slow emancipation.

The biographies presented in this paper demonstrate the tenacity of women doctors in the face of misogynistic arguments and fear of competition from male counterparts.
