Abstract EN

This study illustrated the situation of the Merdès tribe during the 19th century, and behind it many Algerian tribes, based on the records of The Sinatus Councilt, which in turn stated that the formation of this tribe was a product of the cohesion and conflict of a group of clans, which were able to settle In the late Ottoman era, and paid taxes for the authority, and then the French occupation came and threw its weight in an attempt to control it for the colonization objectives.

Although Its resistance to the French forces, the measures relating to the estate laws which was taken by the French colonization radically transformed its composition and lifestyle, its land was confiscated, divided into douwars and attached to different municipalities, until the disappearance of the Merdès tribe, like many Algerian tribes.
