This article examines the semantic significance of characterization in Mohamed Sari's Upon the Dahra Range which portrays both the period of the Algerian revolution and the post-independence era.

The plot of the novel is extended through the fictional characters such as that of Abdelkader who fights to free his country Algeria from colonial France, and Ahmed Boulemhayen who represents the suffering of the revolutionary heroes who become marginalized in post-colonial Algeria.

Hence, what are the semantic roles of the characters in the novel? And what is the author's message through this paradox? The events and the characters of the novel interact with one another to illustrate the novel's different conflicts, creating a microcosm of what Algeria went through after independence when opportunistic people climbed up the ladder of glory while true mujahideen were marginalized.
