Some researchers believe that Orientalism began as an intellectual movement with the emergence of Islam, although its name appeared late in the dictionaries of Western languages, and some of them determine the connection of Muslims with non-Muslims in Andalusia and others see the period of the Crusades.

Some of them restore that emergence by establishing Arabic language chairs in European universities in the eighteenth century, establishing scientific societies and the beginning of Orientalist conferences in the nineteenth century.

On the other hand, researchers 'opinions have varied about the survival of the manifestations of Orientalism in contemporary times.
