Abstract EN

Linguistics has recently witnessed a remarkable development, which gave birth to many new fields and approaches of scientific study.

One of these emerging fields is modern linguistics that links cognition or knowledge, on the one hand, and linguistics, on the other hand, in the so-called “Cognitive Linguistics” It is one of the relatively new sciences that is based on the relationship between language, cognition and human knowledge in general The research studies one of the central topics of cognitive linguistics : conceptual metaphors,” which are the scope of cognitive linguistics.

The research aims at answering many questions, such as : How do conceptual metaphors contribute to the construction of meaning ? Are conceptual metaphors capable of a new understanding of things that differs from their traditional one ? Do conceptual metaphors exist in daily life, as George P.

Lakoff and Johnson pointed out, in the same way they exist in poetry ? An important collection of Persian poems has been selected for the purpose of this study : the poems of modern Persian poet Fereydoon Moshiri on account of the marked tendency to use cognitive metaphors that they display.

The research follows the cognitive method which targets studying language units, and thus, its system.

This is in addition to adopting a cognitive approach in semantics in an attempt to understand the link between this linguistic system and the conceptual system that is related itself to the cultural experience, and therefore, the concerns of cognitive semantics and cognitive approaches.

The research is divided into an introduction and three sections that correspond to the division of cognitive metaphors by Lakoff and Johnson in their Metaphors We Live By.

The first section discusses structural metaphors.

The second section sheds light on ontological metaphors while the third section examines orientational metaphors.

The study has many findings that are recorded in the research conclusion.

It is followed by a list of the resources and references used by the researcher.
