Abstract EN

We have approached the book «Women and Terrorism: A Gender Study of the co - writers professor Amal Garami and the journalist Monia Al - Arfaoui in its theoretical and historical framework.

We adopted a critical analytical approach to reviewing the theoretical part of this book, which was edited by Amal Garami.

We attempted to focus on how femininity and masculinity - related stereotypes and inherited social representations were deconstructed in cases of violence, religious extremism and «jihadist» actions.

Those pictures and representations have imprisoned both women and men in cliché of attributes, values, behaviors and roles.

Accordingly, genderized orders presupposes the inevitably response to the views that consider violence as a male characteristic, and look at women as reluctant, cowardly, and emotional.

We were eager to explain those stereotypes represented in the genderedness of terrorism, in relation to the reasons of belonging to terrorist groups, or the roles that women play in that regard.

We followed Garami’s attempt to refute this thesis (the genderedness of terrorism), and to defend another, that presupposes the multiplicity of female and male paths in belonging to terrorist groups or advancing roles in their course.

In our appraisal of the book’s thesis, we sought to criticize some arguments and theses, such as considering the anatomical physiological structure of females and males a negative vessel whose role does not exceed the absorption of gender ideologies and the reception of ideas, images and representations.

I also criticize the superficial and ostensible aspects of genderized reasons of belonging and roles played in the core of terrorist organizations.

Also, I emphasisze that men themselves are subject to their own domination according to the Marxist phrase evoked by Pierre Bourdieu (Dominés par leur domination), and that they must respond to the received gender-based dictations as expected of them socially.
