Abstract EN

Our students receive knowledge on Al-Khalil Ibn Ahmad Al-Farahidiin various modules, sometimes in syntax, in Arabic prosody (Al-ʿarūḍ) and some other times in phonetics.

Yet, this division disperesed knowlegde andgenerated confusions especially when phonetics and lexicography were set apart.

In some places, Al-khalil is taught as the first to compile the first dictionary and in others as the introducer of phonetics; however, all these remain general information.

If lexicography and phonetics were put together, with some scrutiny, it would appear that Al-khalil's science is somewhere between the two.

Thus, this article aims at approaching Al-khalil Ibn Ahmad phonologically as well as lexicographically to demonstrate how he organized the sounds of language as they appear in the dictionary and to clarify the reason behind the lack of understanding Al-khalil's phonological organization throughout the centuries.
