Abstract EN

This thesis seeks to define the concept of adaptation and integration in accordance with the cultural specificity of the Armenians in Bourj Hammoud as a group who came to Lebanon at the end of 1915.

The purpose of this study is to determine the state of acculturation friction in the Armenian community, in the first, second, and third generations, via presenting three principal concepts: cultural discipline, cultural resistance and cultural compromise which imprinted the path of social and cultural adaptation and integration of the aforementioned group in the «Lebanese host» area.

Accordingly, I have formed an interpretative hypothesis for research which stipulates that the Armenian community in Bourj Hammoud have, in terms of the social, cultural and linguistic aspects, adapted but did not integrate to the extent of cohesion in the host society.

This is the hypothesis I formulated via analyzing large amounts of data that was obtained by relying on the techniques of anthropology research and that include direct observation, participant observation, direct and indirect interviews and biographies.

The conclusion reached is that the social cultural fabric of groups in Lebanon (cultural mosaic) led this studied group not to integrate and adapt to the extent of cohesion.
