Abstract EN

Assimilation is an interaction among phonetic characteristics during the articulation process, which results in the following of one letter to another.

Additionally, this dependency is the outcome of the apparent disparity in the degrees of strength between the features of the two letters.

Therefore, the present research aims to uncover the sources of the strength of the letter and to show the extent of the effect of the letter's characteristics and position in the assimilation process among phonemes with extrapolation of the evidence of the phenomenon (i.

e.

, Assimilation) from the words of the ArHence, the present study is entitled as ''the Term of Assimilation in Ibn Manzour's “Lissan El Arab”: An Phonological Study in the Light of Linguistics''.

The significance of this study comes from the fact that it provides a detailed account of the connotations of the term "Assimilation" by tracking the views of linguists in this regard with the aim of consolidating the term.

The study also examines the evidence of assimilation in the dictionary of “Lisān al-ʿArab” of Ibn Manẓūr, while providing detailed phonetic explanations of these pieces of evidence by presenting the opinions of ancient and modern linguists.

In this study, the researcher employs the descriptive and analytical approach that is based on investigating the phenomenon of assimilation in the dictionary of Lisān al-ʿArab with the analysis and interpretation of evidence in the light of the ancient and modern linguistics.

Consequently, the nature of the research has required that it be divided into two sections as follows Section One: The term of assimilation between the ancient and the modern linguists, and it is concerned with theorizing the term by tracing the opinions of the ancients and modernists in this regard.

Section Two: An applied study of the term ''assimilation'' in the dictionary of Lisān al-ʿArab of Ibn Manẓūr, in which four sub-sections are as follows: Assimilation of regressive partial influence in case of two consonants connection.

Assimilation of progressive partial influence in case of two consonants connection.

Each section presents issues that are explored in detail in the research.
