Abstract EN

This study aims to examine the artistic constituents of the humorous narrative text through application of a theoretical framework that explores the philosophical dimensions and human values of humorous sayings in Al-Maqama Al-Mosuliya by Badi’ Al-Zaman Al- Hamāthani.

In the light of this critical vision, the study attempts to answer the following question: what are the symbolic and philosophical connotations that form the satirical paradox in Al-Maqama Al-Mosuliya’s discourse, and what is its impact on formulating narrative components? The study used a semiotic model based on the hypothesis of interpretative collaboration developed by Umberto Eco (1996) in the context of his discussion of the blank spaces of the text, demonstrating the importance of the interaction between the text and the interpreter.

The significance of this study lies in its re-reading of a traditional text in the light of a modern critical theory that adopts openness in the narrative text as a concept that brings to light the aesthetics of reception of the narrative heritage in Arabic literature.

The most important outcomes reached by the study are: (1) detection of the aspects of the behavioral paradoxes implied in humorous discourse; and (2) the important role that behavioral paradoxes play in formulating narrative components.

This stylistic blending has resulted in a kind of aesthetic interaction in a fictional narrative space that depends on allusion to avoid overt discourse, which makes writers subject to accountability and leads to the elimination of the freedom of expression.
