Abstract EN

Domestic violence crime has risen and identified cases have also seen an increase.

With its multiple patterns, domestic violence constitutes a threat to family cohesion urging the need for analysis to identify causal factors.

This will pave the way for developing solutions and curbing the spread of the phenomenon.

Through such analysis, patterns of domestic violence crime; perpetrators of such crime; associated factors and solutions envisaged to counter such crime can be identified.

Study used social survey; a questionnaire was adinmistered to a sample of 170 public prosecution investigators in Riyadh City.

Key findings of the study showed that the most common patterns of domestic violence crime accordmg to study sample were: theft, permanent disability, insult and libel, murder, intoxicants and drugs, rape and sexual harassment.

Study sample also strongly agreed that parents and brothers were among the most frequent perpetrators of domestic violence.

Respondents strongly agreed that the major factors associated with domestic violence were marital disputes; weak faith and constant mental stress.

Key solutions to address domestic violence according to study sample were; promoting family dialogue; raising the public awareness; training families on how to address problems and finally providmg good job opportunities for youth.

One of the key recommendations of the study is the need for accurate documentation of domestic violence crime statistics based on case and place of occurrence so that scale and trend of such crimes can be monitored.

Study also recommended that security institutions raise the public awareness about domestic violence causes and remedies by means of intensive, multi - level awareness program.

Finally, study recommended the need for introducing a social protection system for child, women and elderly victims of domestic violence in KSA.
