This study is mainly intended to identify the role of school in preventing extremist thought among secondary school students from the standpoint of secondary school teachers and students in the Emirate of Sharjah- UAE.

It also aims to explore challenges faced by secondary schools in preventing extremist thought among students and identify causal factors of extremist thought among secondary school students in the Emirate of Sharjah- UAE.

Descriptive, analytical method was used, and a questionnaire was administered to study sample to collect data, reliability and validity of which were verified.

Study population comprised male and female teachers and students of both public and private secondary schools in the Emirate of Sharjah- UAE.

Descriptive statistics method as part of SPSS was used to analyze garnered data.

Findings have shown that the overall level of the role of schools in preventing extremist thought among secondary school students in the Emirate of Sharjah – UAE, was average, while the overall level of challenges faced by schools in preventing extremist thought was high.

Findings have also shown that the key challenges were: easy dissemination of deviant and extremist thought among secondary school students via internet and social media; poor participation of schools in national conferences on prevention of extremist thought; failure of schools to keep pace with latest developments in the society and poor cooperation in exchanging school expertise in preventing extremist thought among students.

Study recommended the need for coordination and cooperation between school and relevant community institutions on launching awareness-raising programs aimed at students about the danger extremism poses to individuals and society.

It further recommended intensifying studies and scientific research on extremism phenomenon in UAE community so as to develop common preventive measures.
