Abstract EN

The present study aims to examine the relationship between social class and drug use among addicts in the United Arab Emirates.

The study was conducted on a sample of (60) addicts who are subject to treatment and rehabilitation at the Addiction Center in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The study used a questionnaire to collect data related to addicts, demography, social and economic characteristics, as well as addiction history of the participants and the type of drugs they use.

Items in the questionnaire included topics such as demographic, social, subjective, objective, and social class variables.

The findings of the study revealed the following: three is a significant relationship between the objective and subjective social class dimensions (level of education, occupation, monthly family income, adequacy of income, debt, upper social class and middle social class) and drug use among addicts.

The study revealed that law difficulties, socioeconomic obstacles, unemployment with no regular monthly income, and family conflicts were the main difficulties encountering addicts and pushing them to resort to alcohol and drugs.

Finally, the study suggested treating addicts instead of jailing them, considering the addict as a patient rather than criminal, in addition to helping addicts to get a job and social support.

These suggestions could help addicts to reintegrate into their community after getting treatment.
