Abstract EN

As a result of its war in 1967, (Israel) occupied an area of 1250 square kilometers of the Syrian territory known as Golan Heights, which regardless of any (Israeli) claims on security considerations, certainly it is Syrian territory.

After Hafez al- Assad gained power in Syria in 1970, he fought with Egypt in a surprise war in 1973 against Israel, resulting in the liberation of 50 square kilometers from the Golan Heights.

Once the war ended, Syria began to move toward a peaceful solution to the Golan issue, until 1991, the former US president George Bush announced his desire for peace to prevail all over Arab eastern area.

The call of US president for peace led to 1991 Madrid peace conference, in which Syria participated under the slogan (land for peace), while Israel took part under the rule of (Liquid ) party led by (Shamir) raised slogan( peace for peace), leaving the issue of withdrawal from the Golan a matter of uncertainty.

In 1992 under the leadership of (Isaac Rabin), the labor party became the ruler of Israel.

Us diplomacy accelerated the resumption of the Syrian - (Israeli) negotiation s and after three years of negotiations (Rabin) agreed to full withdrawal from the Syrian Golan, but the Israeli opposition did not appreciate these developments that led to Rabin's assassination in 1995 by an extreme right- wing Jew, and the peace process collapsed.
