Abstract EN

The research is aimed at uncovering the level and the nature of readership of political news for Iraqi young university students.

The research is descriptive, and it adopted the analytical descriptive survey method.

A sample of 388 respondents composed of Iraqi young university students who read political news was purposively selected.

A questionnaire was used to collect data and the following conclusions were reached: the level of the readership of political news for Iraqi young university students was rather high.

The factors, (Nature of the political issues), (trustworthiness of the news organization), and (availability of the paper) have mostly influenced the readership among the other factors.

Concerning the motives behind this readership, the underlying ritual motives were overwhelmed by the utilitarian ones, represented by (tracking development of political events), (taking a position on political issues), and (obtaining new information about political topics).

Knowledge-related gratifications were mostly achieved by Iraqi young university students from their readership represented by (it kept me informed about the development of political events), (it enabled me to develop my political knowledge in quantity and quality) and (it contributed to the creation of my own conception of political issues).

There were not any statistically significant differences among Iraqi young university students according to the variables gender and academic major in their readership of political news, while the opposite was true for the variables (stage of study) in favor of the first stage student, age (partially) in favor of the age group (18-22 years).

There was also a positive direct relationship between the underlying motives behind the Iraqi young university student's readership of political news and the gratifications achieved accordingly.
