Developing countries, including Iraq, face great difficulties in obtaining local capital and in sufficient amounts to achieve the required level of investment to develop their economies.

Therefore, these countries have tended to attract foreign direct investment and try to create an attractive investment environment by creating the ingredients for this environment.

Foreign direct investment in developing countries plays a prominent role in raising the efficiency of the export sector, as there are products that cannot be produced without the activity of foreign companies, as the presence of such companies contributes to opening global markets for the products of the industries it establishes in the host countries of investment, which leads to Increased exportsOn the basis of that, this study came with the aim of knowing the effect of foreign direct investment in the economic environment of Iraq and what contributes to achieving economic development, and the relationship between this type of investments and exports in Iraq during a specific time period.

The research problem was embodied in that Iraq suffers from obstacles and problems in attracting foreign direct investment to develop its exports, and through it was formulated the hypothesis that exports in Iraq are greatly affected by the flow of foreign direct investment to them, and the study covered the period (1990-2017), as the study covered the period (1990-2017), as well The study adopted the descriptive approach to study the theoretical side, relying in this on the methods of economic analysis.

As for the applied side, the statistical quantitative approach was used to reveal the causal relationship.
