Abstract EN
The deterioration in the processes of selecting sites for sanitary landfills and its dangerous environmental impacts, which in turn affects the lives of citizens in the Al-Hurr district, where the current dumpster violates international and Iraqi standards for the construction of waste landfills, has led to study and evaluate the current dumpster in the Al-Hurr district.
Using the technology of Geographical Information System (GIS), a framework has been taken with an aerial image of the city of Karbala illustrated the Al-Hurr district, the uses of urban land have been defined in the form of layers including the built areas and other uses such as agricultural use, in addition to the establishment of the layer of roads and rivers, where the tools of "ArcMap" software were used to make a reclassification of each layer, then the Euclidean distance tool was used, according to which it, positions and distances were put of each layer from the location of the new dumpster, as shown in the following maps.
The process of planning for landfills is one of the difficult and complicated processes, as it is in direct contact with citizens and other uses in cities, where the planning process goes through several stages linked together to reach the right choice, which takes into account the collection of other urban uses depending on a number of means such as remote sensing data, the Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and merging them to reach the most appropriate sites for waste landfill by relying on the results of data analysis obtained in the form of maps.
After comparing the Al-Hurr district dumpster with the approved standards, it turned out that the current dumpster in an inappropriate, since it is close to the residential areas, and has a negative impact on the neighborhoods near the dumpster as well as lack of any features that support its continuity.
