Abstract EN

Water has been an important factor in the emergence and development of Iraqi-Saudi relations since the beginning of the formation of their modern political entities despite some differences over the delimitation of borders.

But in the end, they recognized the borders of each other and share the water wells along the border areas, including the neutral zone.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's need for Iraqi expertise has further strengthened these relations in the field of developing its water resources in Al-Kharj region in particular.

Not only that, but also asked the Iraqi government to provide it with fresh water from the Shatt al-Arab or the Euphrates River, proposing to withdraw water from Iraqi lands by digging an open canal, or extending a network of pipes running towards the city of Riyadh and the surrounding areas.

However, the idea of the project was soon halted for many political and economic reasons.
