Epicureanism had an important stand in the face of fear of death; by denying post-mortem judgment and immortality, it clearly advocated the removal of fear from human beings, and believed that fear of death and fear of the gods would constrain the mind from attaining happiness.

Furthermore, this doctrine considered the real life of man as low-ranked as followers had viewed death as a kind of long sleep causing no fear thereof.
