Abstract EN

The research came to clarify the conditions of trade in Syria after its occupation by France and how the latter used and exploited Syrian trade and ports to serve its military and economic interests.

The research attempted to shed light on the study of the trade policy that the French administration followed in Syria throughout the mandate period 1920-1946, and how that policy was reflected in the overall economic conditions of Syria and the suffering and problems that resulted from that policy The research gave a clear picture of the attempts of economic penetration in Syria through the treaties that had previously been granted by the Ottoman Empire, which were renewed with the receipt of each new sultan.

The research indicated that the French mandate followed the open door policy, which entails opening Syrian doors to foreign goods, especially French, as he explained.

The research: The internal trade conditions of Syria have retreated and are affected by the retail policy adopted by the French administration, in addition to the lack of transportation routes.

As for the Syrian foreign trade, its position was not better than its internal trade, as it also showed a permanent deficit in the balance of exports and imports.

The research also showed how the circumstances of the Second World War 1939-1945, and the German occupation of France, contributed to cutting Syria's economic relations with the outside world, so the export of Syrian goods to Europe was cut off.

And this negatively affected the economic conditions, especially in the early years of the war.
