Abstract EN

This paper gives data for and-attempts to analyze the spatial patterns of population distribution in the Sultanate of Oman.

The study used census data from 1993.

Several measures were used to analyze the population distribution patterns, including simple population densities, population concentration ratios, Lorenz curves, and mean population centers.

The results of the study clearly indicate that population distribution in Oman was characterized by two main patterns.

The first pattern pertains especially well to the coastal areas in north and northeastern districts of the country, including the Muscat Governorate and the Batina District.

This pattern showed an almost evenly distributed population with relatively high population densities.

However, there was a variation in population densities among the Wilayats of these areas.

The highest density was in Mutrah Wilayat, which was found to have 915.3 persons / km2.

By contrast, the lowest was in Nakhal, which was found to have about 17 persons / km2.

The second pattern covered the middle and western areas of the Sultanate.

It can be described as a concentrated pattern, with great variation in population densities among the Wilayats of these areas.

The Wilayat with the highest density was Salahah, which was found to have 52.7 persons / km2.

Some of the other Wilayats actually were found to have less than 1 person / km2.
