Abstract EN

Beside melody, rhythm is the other substance of music, and music educators emphasize the need of developing the child’s rhythmic sense, not only for musical but also for educational purposes such as teaching the child stability and balance in movement.

In Jordanian Folk songs, Hazaj rhythm is dominating along with different derivatives and other rhythms, giving the feeling of new rhythmic patterns.

However, their origin is derived from Hazaj rhythm, which is also known as the "Al khafeef al Awal".

As the child begins to grow and learn to walk, some mothers used to sing for him/her some kind children folk songs, which include simple binary rhythm based on crotchets.

Those rhythms gradually become complex and thus simulates the stages of growth progress, simultaneously with the development of rhythmic sense and understanding of rhythmic element.

The aim of this research is to reveal the process perceiving and developing musical rhythmic sense of the child to be tangible and later, to be learned during the different stages of age by listening and / or practicing “rhythmic patterns” existing in Jordanian children’s songs, as those are usually based on Hazaj rhythm.
