Abstract AR
Abstract EN
Kairouan is not only the earliest and most important Islamic Maghreb.
Through centuries, Kairouancould excrete a multidisciplinary institution i.
e.
the House of Wisdom (Bayt Al- Hikma) which was the seed for the city medical school and that impacted the scientific movement in the Islamic Maghreb wholly.
The credit, thus, goes to Aghlabid rulers' great interest on abundant sciences, mainly medicine and pharmacy.
Aghlabid rulers strived to enhance both medicine and pharmacy by means of constructing medical schools teaching medicine theoretically while insuring practice at hospitals.
Hence, medical schools were usually attached to hospitals.
During the Aghlabid era, several cities such as Tunis, Sfax, and Soussa were the location of those some institutions devoted for epidemics.
Aghlabid rulers, to their side, imported significant number of various books from East to the House of Wisdom.
Furthermore, they brought scholars of astronomy, botany, mathematics, and medicine along far and wide.
Once Fatimids moved to Cairo and due to loss of precious books, the House of Wisdom activities were paralyzed.
It is only in Al- Mûîz Li Deeni- Allah Assanhajiera that the House of Wisdom recalled its leading role, basically in medicine and pharmacy.
