The theory of the novel by the author Georges Lukacs is a topical product of intellectual science.

Although rooted in the intellectual sciences approach, this book shows within the given limitation, certain new features which were to acquire significance in the light of developments.

The theory of the novel was the first work belonging to the intellectual science school in which the findings of Hegelian philosophy were concretely applied to aesthetic problems.

The first, general part of the book is essentially determined by Hegel, the comparison of the mode of totality in epic and the novel have in common and what differentiates them.

Georges Lukacs thus argues that the novel is the form of epic writing that is appropriate for a specific moment in history.

In modernity, epic writing has no longer any distinct from that could express any particular relation between life and essence within a totality.

Rather, the form of the novel is an attempt to deal with the ence of this relation.
