Abstract EN

The French colonial period ofCambodia (1863-1935) is one ofthe most important periods inCambodia's modern history.

TheFrench rule to Cambodiahappened in a very complicatecircumstances where Cambodianwas suffering for a long timefrom seizing it's land by borderneighbors, Vietnam and Thailand.

Until then, Cambodia ask Francefor protection, assuming Francewill protect Cambodia.

Francestarted to take advantage of thissituation and enforce its existencein Cambodia and started tointerfere with the Cambodianpolitical and economic affairs.

The research aims to shed light onthe French rule of Cambodia andits effects at various levels.

Theresearch begins in 1863, when theRoyal Family of Cambodiasigned an agreement with theFrench to establish a Frenchprotectorate on the kingdom, andthe country gradually becameunder French colonial control, butthe reason why of making theyear of 1953 the end of theresearch, is due to the Cambodia'sindependence and the end ofFrench rule.

The research was divided intoseveral sections.

The first sectionsdeals with the geographicallocation of Cambodia and itsstrategic importance.

The secondsections includes theestablishment of the Kingdom ofCambodia and the establishmentof the Khmer Empire.

The thirdsections discusses the French ruleuntil the outbreak of The WorldWar II and the accompanyingimportant events, including theFrench Protection Treaty in 1863.

The fourth sections includesFrench rule during World War IIand the occupation of France byGermany and its impact on theFrench colonies in Indochina, aswell as the Japanese occupationof Cambodia.

Finally, the fifthsections includes the return ofdirect French rule of Cambodiauntil Cambodia gained itsindependence in 1953.
