Aspects of satire in Joseph Conrad's “heart of darkness” : a pragma-stylistic study

Abstract EN

This research is mainly dedicated for explaining the correlation between pragmatics and stylistics in two representative extracts quoted from Conrad's novella “Heart of Darkness”.

The correlated aspects between pragmatics and stylistics are well represented in the extracts and are well demonstrated and referred to in the analysis.

The two extracts represent two different stylistic devices but each stylistic device will be dealt with and analyzed using the same pragmatic strategies.

During this research, it will be clarified that the way to understand and cope with the stylistic speech is the pragmatic interpretation.

In other words, stylistics, being an aspect of speech that is performed figuratively, can be interpreted and realized through pragmatics as it helps the readers to understand it figuratively not semantically.
